Our Purpose

Preserving Bighorn Sheep and Their Habitat

At the Texas Bighorn Society (TBS), our purpose is deeply rooted in the preservation of bighorn sheep and their natural habitat across the Lone Star State. Since our inception in 1981, we have been committed to this noble cause, driven by a shared passion for wildlife conservation and a profound respect for the natural world.

History of TBS

In 1981, a small group of dedicated bighorn enthusiasts formed the Texas Chapter of FNAWS (Foundation for North American Wild Sheep) and the Texas Bighorn Society, embarking on an intense lobbying effort to support the re-introduction of bighorn sheep in Texas. Through perseverance and advocacy, these two groups merged under the auspices of the Texas Bighorn Society, garnering crucial support from influential figures and government entities.

The early years saw significant milestones, including the construction of brood pastures in the Sierra Diablo Wildlife Management Area and the donation of Elephant Mountain Ranch for bighorn conservation efforts. These efforts laid the groundwork for the successful re-establishment of bighorn sheep populations in Texas, with over 1500 bighorns now roaming seven locations in the mountains of West Texas.

Fundraising Initiatives

Fundraising is at the heart of our conservation efforts, providing vital support for bighorn sheep reintroduction programs, habitat restoration projects, scientific research, and educational initiatives. Through various fundraising initiatives, we aim to raise awareness and generate financial resources to sustain our conservation efforts and ensure the long-term survival of bighorn sheep populations.

Annual Roundup Weekend and Auction:

Our annual Roundup serves as our primary fundraising event, uniting members, supporters, and wildlife enthusiasts in a weekend dedicated to bighorn sheep conservation. The auction held during the Roundup provides the majority of our annual funding, fueled by generous donations from outside organizations, members, companies, and friends of TBS. Contributions directly support our conservation projects, habitat restoration efforts, and educational programs, ensuring the continued preservation of bighorn sheep and their habitat. Your participation in the Roundup is essential, whether through donating auction items, bidding, or attending. If you have ideas for items or wish to contribute, please visit the Roundup page or contact one of our Directors. Information and registration will be available approximately two months before the event. Join us as we celebrate our commitment to wildlife conservation and the preservation of bighorn sheep populations in Texas.

Membership Dues:

Membership dues play a crucial role in supporting our ongoing conservation efforts. By becoming a member of TBS, individuals and organizations contribute to the preservation of bighorn sheep and their habitat, gaining access to exclusive events, resources, and opportunities to engage in conservation activities.

Donations:

We welcome donations from individuals, businesses, and organizations passionate about wildlife conservation. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference in our mission to protect bighorn sheep and their habitat for future generations.

Legacy Giving:

Legacy giving offers supporters the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on bighorn sheep conservation through bequests, trusts, and other planned giving arrangements. By including TBS in their estate plans, donors can ensure that their commitment to wildlife conservation endures beyond their lifetime.
